Ulewicz dazzles as Cardinals win second straight district title

BROWN CITY — The Kingston softball team took down a conference foe on the way to winning a Division 4 district championship here on Friday.
The Cardinals knocked out their North Central Thumb League Stars division rival Peck 5-3 in the second game of the afternoon. Brown City defeated Marlette in the opening game 16-13 to earn a spot in the championship game.
Kingston went on to defeat the host Green Devils in a 12-2 mercy shortened title game.
“I can’t even put it into words how happy I am,” Kingston coach Rob St. George said. “We played a couple of good teams here today. We knew Peck was going to be tough because we played them close twice before, but we had no idea how the other two (Brown City and Marlette) were going to be.”

Fast forward 10 weeks and Lemke is a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state champion. The 5-foot-11 Lemke, in his first season of varsity track and field, leaped 6-foot-8 to win the high jump title Saturday at Baldwin Middle School in Hudsonville.

He edged out Finn Hogan of Maple City Glen Lake, who won the silver with a jump of 6-7.

JENISON  — Cass City’s Madison Beckrow reached new heights Saturday.

The senior pole vaulter posted 11-feet-3-inches to not only win the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state title, but also set a new school record. The previous Red Hawk record was 10-7.

“At the beginning of the season I started out really well,” said Beckrow. “I didn’t have a lot of practice going into the first meet at Caro and I ended up getting a personal record of 9-9. I then was able to jump 10-feet and after that I started dropping off a little bit.
