CASS CITY – The Cass City and Caro varsity wrestling squads competed here Wednesday in front of a gymnasium packed with students and staff.

Cass City defeated Caro 63-15 in “The Pit” – the Cass City High School gymnasium – during an assembly dual where students were let out of class early to enjoy the matchup. “It was awesome,” Caro coach Rocco Borg said. “I was so pumped that they allowed us to be a part of it. It was really loud and that was the first time our kids got to be in that type of atmosphere where they were being heavily rooted against.”

The gym was darkened over the crowd while a spotlight shone down on the wrestling mat in the middle of the gym. Cass City earned the victory with wins from Christian Culver (in the 165-pound division), Aaron Pietrzak (175), Logan Kaake (190), Trysten Gruber (215), Rylan Kruse (285), Baily Fick (106), Zachary Cowdry (113), William George (120), Mason Brown (126), Chelsea Roach (132) and Cameron Gottschalk (144).

The Tigers had victories from Blayne Farris (150), Jonathon Ramirez (157) and Todd Bailey (138). “Last year at districts we had this same atmosphere,” Borg said. “It was real loud and we were kind of starstruck by it and I think this will help everyone for the future and being on a bigger stage.”

Borg also noted that the Tigers look to make the assembly dual a tradition with Cass City, and alternate the event between the two schools every year. The Red Hawks return to action today at the Carrollton Team Tournament while Caro returns to action Feb. 4 at the Greater Thumb Conference championships in Vassar.
