THUMB AREA — The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association recently announced their season-ending awards for the 2013 season.
A pair of coaches from the Tuscola County Advertiser coverage area were honored as MHSFCA Regional Coaches of the Year.
Millington head coach Roger Bearss was one of four coaches who received top honors in Region 11. This season Bearss led the Cardinals to a Division 5 district title before finishing the year 9-3 overall. During his four seasons at Millington, Bearss has piled up a record of 39-8.
Also making this year’s Region 11 list of coaches is Reese’s Bob Saylor.
This season Saylor and the Rockets went 8-2 while notching a fifth straight Greater Thumb West championship. The successful season carried Saylor’s record to 122-43 all-time.
Other Thumb Coaches earning Coach of the Year honors in their respective Region’s include Harbor Beach’s Troy Schelke (Region 11), Peck’s Rob McDaniel (Region 18) and North Huron’s Travis Fischer (Region 18).
In Division 4, North Branch was listed among the 2013 MHSFCA Academic All-State team’s with their team grade-point average of 3.815 while in Division 5, both Frankenmuth (3.710) and Millington (3.630) were ranked among the top 20 teams in the state.
Rounding out the area teams who made their way on to the 2013 Academic All-State list were Reese (3.528) and Vassar (3.449), whose team GPA’s were among the top 15 in Division 6.
Individually, Frankenmuth’s Lance Frahm and Noah Zimmerman were eached named to the 2013 Academic All-State First Team while Millington’s Colin Mecham snagged Second Team honors.
Landing among the MHSFCA’s honorable mention were Reese’s Cody Peyok and North Branch’s Doug Stikeleather.
